Objectives

  • To engender and restore pride in Colchester among the local population

  • To put a smile on the faces of customers and other visitors
Potential projects

  • To provide "hands off" support and sponsorship brokering for various and independent groups including, but not exclusive to:
    1. Colchester Festival Association
    2. Colchester History Fayre Trust
    3. Colchester Town Watch

  • To co-ordinate better promotion and awareness of town centre events

  • To encourage the revival of historic events and edge of centre events such as St Denis' Fair and the Wilderness Fair, and the stablishment of special themed weeks

  • To encourage quality, or otherwise appealing, street buskers and entertainers

  • To encourage temporary static and live arts installations in the town centre

  • To review current Christmas lights and floral decoration provision, and to support and provide incentives for businesses to decorate their own premises

  • To develop the annual Christmas Decoration Awards

  • To launch and develop Shop Front Awards, backed up by advice and support for improvements, (Colchester Civic Society)

  • To review street furniture and streetscape clutter, (English Heritage)

  • To assist the local authority to deploy its resources to meet statutory requirements for street cleaning, (defra Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse 2006), and toilet maintenance

  • To develop a business network of "eyes and ears" to identify and record street cleanliness and other highway issues

  • To develop a hotline for businesses to highlight immediate problems, and a "man with a barrow" to respond

  • To review town centre refuse collections to minimise bin bags on pavements
